Installment #4 – The first part of Roger’s backstory

August 31, 2013 // 2 Comments

[EDIT:  Adding a potential cover pic…Aubrey Watt is doing another great cover, but while she’s at work on it, I don’t want my G+/FB posts coming up without any pic, and this one is kinda hot!] Oh my God I’m exhausted after this part…  The title’s changed to “Given the Circumstances,” which makes more sense than Situation; there’s a story called “Love, Life and Circumstances” out there now, so I wanted to avoid using the same word, I don’t know why.  But I keep typing Circumstances instead of Situation, so there you go. This part says Chapter Three, though I never marked Chapter Two earlier, but I realized Brian’s backstory is a chapter in itself. CHAPTER THREE – THE DECEPTICON Roger still had his first football, or at least, the pieces that were left of it unchewed by dogs or torn off by year of use.  It was, had been, a Nerf football, a lurid orange foam rubber thing that he’d found in his [MORE]

$35 sent to IAVA this morning, thanks to you

August 31, 2013 // 0 Comments

Royalties as of this a.m. for “A Little Too Broken” are around $325 for August, so I rounded up and sent $35 off to IAVA, as promised.  As long as the proceeds are in the lower range, I’ll just send the money at the end of the earned month rather than waiting for my payments 60 days later; they need that money more than I need to hold onto it for two more months.  Unless y’all make it a GIANT HIT in September, and the 10% is more than I can send until I get paid myself 🙂 Don’t forget that you can donate here, too:  https://secure.iava.org/donate-now Roger’s “origin story” is under way, and I’ll be pubbing more content here when it’s ready.  Maybe today, definitely by tomorrow.  There is a LOT I need to learn about college football programs, and football itself – to be honest, while I’ve always been a football fan I’ve never been a “student of the game.”  So before I talk about zone reads [MORE]

Installment #3 – the rest of Brian’s backstory

August 30, 2013 // 4 Comments

Wow, the hardest thing about writing a story about college athletes is figuring out the Byzantine NCAA regulations about transfers and eligibility.  You can transfer from a two year to a four year college, but if you’re transferring from a four year to another four year, unless it’s Division I to II or III, you have to spin a plate on a stick for six hours each day except on game day when you stand on one foot…  So there may be factual inaccuracies in here for now, but that’s because…NOBODY understands NCAA eligibility regulations. So I had to go back and fix Coach Blaine’s “two year” requirement for Brian (if he goes to university, he has to log three years in school before he’s re-eligible for the pros).  And after I wrote today’s bit, I had to go back and true up Brian’s commitment to school (which was lax in yesterday’s draft, but not so much now, at least for now…).  I know, first draft, but for [MORE]

Installment #2: 5k of “Given the Situation” for your holiday pleasure!

August 29, 2013 // 2 Comments

Okay, this one is rolling.  Here’s a big ass chunk of raw red first draft meat, so copy edit away, please 🙂 CHAPTER ONE – JUST ONE MORE MINUTE Roger weaved through the crowded paths on his bike, always looking, looking ten, twenty moves ahead.  That chick standing on the grass with her back to the sidewalk?  That dude who’s macking on her is going to move into her personal space, and she’s going to back up just a bit, narrowing your lane.  Adjust accordingly.  That guy with the campus map in his hand, he’s going to stop in his tracks right…now.  That girl’s whispering in the other girl’s ear, something that’s going to make her crack up and turn and bend over laughing, bear right around the girl who’s talking. It was practice without pads, running a route that never ended, always dodging and darting, relishing his incredible fast twitch reflexes, never missing, never colliding, leaving only an occasional indignant “Hey!” behind him as he came so [MORE]

A First Taste of “Given The Situation”

August 28, 2013 // 7 Comments

…just started my quarterback/outfielder story.  Given the decent returns on ALTB, even without any publicity so far, I can see that I need to get another longer-form romance out there soon.  Angelina has a lot of research to do for her book, and she needs to take her time on her heteromcom, so it’s Brad’s turn at the helm for the long weekend. So, here’s a little taste of what’s to come… GIVEN THE SITUATION – Prologue “Roger!  Roger!  Over here!” Instinct, and manners, still told him to look at someone who called his name.  But that was another change fame would be making in him, he guessed.  When a couple hundred people were calling it, your name became less your property, more theirs.  And this was different than the friendly call of fans wanting autographs – this was more feral, more desperate, every one of these guys (and they were all guys) needing the shot to make their living, their paycheck. He also understood now why [MORE]

Angelina’s 15K in, and I’m taking the computer back this long weekend

August 27, 2013 // 2 Comments

Angelina’s romantic comedy is at 15,000 words and growing.  But it’s nearly time for her to take a break and let me use the computer for a while 🙂  “A Little Too Broken” has sold about 75 copies in a week, with admittedly not a whole lot of marketing on my part (I’m working on that; over the long weekend I’m going to find some more M/M book reviewers for it).  So, yeah, long form for the win!  I want to keep this ball rolling by getting another Brad Vance Bromance on the shelf soon. And the timing feels right for my quarterback/outfielder love story.  I’d love to get that out by the end of September.  It’s got a lot of emotional potential, but nothing like the intensity of what I went through writing “ALTB,” so it should flow pretty well. There’s no rush on Angelina’s book; I think this one could be big, and she’s going to need a website, a marketing plan, all that stuff, and it’ll be October [MORE]

Price drop on “A Little Too Broken”

August 25, 2013 // 5 Comments

…it’s now at $3.99.  Thanks to those who paid $5, but I realized I needed to lower the price a bit.  At 129 pages by Amazon’s count, and given the pricing around other gay romance titles, $4 is a more realistic number.  If lowering the price 20% raises sales at least 20%, well, then I’m even! It’s made about $200 in royalties so far since publication last week, so that’s at least a $20 donation for IAVA in the first month!  I’ll give you a final number in a week.  As long as the royalties are in this range, I’m going to go ahead and send those donations in at the end of each sales month, rather than waiting the 60 days from end of month before Amazon, BN etc. pay me.  Of course if it ends up selling a thousand copies a month, the 10% will have to wait till I get paid [MORE]

Angelina is 8K into her romcom! And Brad’s Gay Epic on the back burner…

August 21, 2013 // 2 Comments

Angelina’s first novel is still tentatively titled “Curse of the Summer Queen.”  Then, when we’re done channeling her, I’m going to do the Quarterback/Outfielder Love Story, which already has a fully fleshed outline. And after that…Well, I have an idea for a truly epic erotic gay romance…I’ve been fascinated forever by New York in the 70s.  And what a gold mine it is!  Punk Rock, Warhol’s Factory, Studio 54, major blackouts, Times Square porno palaces, Edmund White, Patti Smith/Robert Mapplethorpe, Andrew Holleran’s “Dancer From the Dance,” Larry Kramer’s “Faggots,” Fire Island, holy crap you name it!  Can’t wait to figure out what to do with this [MORE]

“A Little Too Broken” is Published…Need some review love ASAP!

August 18, 2013 // 2 Comments

Wow, Amazon is fast on putting things up when they’re not erotica! “A Little Too Broken” is here on amazon.com, as well as amazon.co.uk, and of course amazon.de.  Also here on Smashwords.com and allromancebooks.com, and coming soon to bn.com and eventually to the iStore. As soon as you’ve had a chance to read it, and of course if you like it, please leave a review!  On Amazon in particular, since their algorithms seem to pump up books with more, better reviews. THANKS AGAIN!  Now it’s time for me to go give birth to my sister Angelina Vance, WINK! Be on the lookout for her website and her first novel, a romantic comedy currently tentatively titled “Curse of the Summer Queen.”  Details to come here and there very [MORE]
