ALL HAIL THE BOOKNOTOAD! Er, BookBub, that is. “A Little Too Broken” raked in buckets of ducats this month, mostly thanks to the Bookbub at the beginning of the month. So that means $560 split down the middle between IAVA and WWP.
Now, as you all know, normally I don’t wait for the ‘zon and other companies to pay me before I send the donation – I’ll put the money out of my own pocket on the 31st or 1st right after the end of the earning month. However. Since this is SOO MUCH MONEY, and I didn’t work a day job in July, and therefore didn’t have any paychecks in August, I have to wait on this till I have some ducats of my own. It shouldn’t take until the end of October (when Amazon will pay me for August royalties earned), but I do need to get a couple paychecks back in my pocket before I can pay it out. In the name of transparency, I will, as always, keep you posted 🙂
That said. Rocky and Dex are mushrooming into a huge ever-growing pulsating novel – omg what a backstory these two are getting. I had to keep all that out of “Angelina’s” novel, because I was told it just didn’t sell in that genre, and I think the frustration of not doing that has doubled up what I’m putting into Rocky and Dex. Poor bastards – you wanna give someone a hard luck backstory, make ’em gay and give ’em a childhood in the dark heart of Redneckistan. That’s Biloxi, Mississippi for Dex and Marietta GA for Rocky – also known as Cobb County, which in 1992 (when Rocky was 5) defunded all arts programs because the arts promote homosexuality. Yeah. Fucking Redneckistan.
So what else is in the pipeline? Well, it’s funny. You think you’re going to make it big with something, and in the end it’s the damn thing you never expected would go anywhere that hits the jackpot. I wrote the “Colum’s Viking Captivity” stories when Vikings were a hot commodity – but I researched the fuck out of those when all the other Viking stories just said, “He’s a Viking and he’s a slave, now they’re doing it.” And you know, they’re not for everyone, because along with the sexin’ there’s all that anticlerical stuff and shit about lost classical manuscripts etc. etc.
And I did a different pricing thing with Colum. I set #1 at free, #2 at .99, and #3 at 2.99. I figured, if you were seriously into this story by #3, you’d fork out three bucks for it. And it’s true! About 700 people downloaded Colum #1 in August. And it wasn’t for most of them, since maybe 50 of them went on to #2. BUT. Almost everyone who bought #2 also bought #3. You love it or you hate it, and if you love it, you see how much research went into it (and how HAWT the sexin’ is!), and you’ll pay the three bucks for a short at a time when it’s like pulling teeth to get people to pay more than that for a whole novel. And a lot of reviews of #3 are all like, damn is this the end of the series? And I’d written into it a cycle of roles for Colum that could conceivably take the series through five to seven stories.
So, you can see where I would think it worth my while to do another Colum soon. And when I reach one of those points where I “gas out” on Rocky and Dex for a while, and have to let the pot simmer, then yeah. There WILL be another Colum story this fall.
And no, I haven’t forgotten Rob the Daemon. This is hands down my worst-selling series, but I don’t care! I fucking LOVE Rob and Sol and Lucy the Cat and Gary the Dog and Phoenix and Celia and all and everything about these stories. Rob #3 is my winter project, because I need something silly and crazy and light in the winter. And who knows, put enough of ’em out there and maybe they’ll get some traction. But these are the stories I write purely for myself now – now that I know they’re not going to make money because Rob’s not a shifter or pack alpha or werewolf or whatever is selling today in gay paranormal.
So that’s the road ahead, probably for the next six months. Angelina is not doing so well 😦 so her career may be a brief one, and I may have complete control of the keyboard from now on.
